GARETH KENNERLEY
Biography
I grew up in a town called Llanelli in South Wales where I joined the local youth theatre and the rest is history.
ACTING: I studied Drama and English at the University of Bristol before undertaking a 3 year acting training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and have completed an MA in film studies from the University of Southampton.
My dual-practices as both actor and teacher have been my main source of income since 2005 and have developed hand in hand. My work as a theatre actor has been well regarded for nearly 20 years, ranging from classical theatre to new writing, physical theatre and musicals for companies including the National Theatre and in West End venues as well as other renowned venues around the UK and Europe. My screen work has included films, short films and commercials and I have worked as a regular on a series for BBC Radio 4. I have been a cast member of Olivier and TMA award winning and nominated productions and have been nominated for an Off-West End Award for best Leading Actor. Working with acclaimed directors such as: Michael Grandage, Dominic Cooke, Yael Farber, Clint Dyer, Tom Morris, Marianne Elliott, Lindsay Posner and Tinuke Craig.
Theatre includes work for:

TV and Film includes work for:
ITV, Amazon, David Nguyen, Irresistible Films, Stage on Screen, National Theatre Live and Rose Bruford,
Radio includes work for: BBC Radio 4, Goldhawk Productions.

LAMDA EXAMS: I teach graded LAMDA exams across several performance topics, specialising in acting, verse and prose and speaking in public. I teach students of all ages in person and online in the UK and internationally. I strive to attain the highest standard of results even when English is not a student’s first language. To date my students have never been graded lower than a merit with the majority receiving distinctions across all subjects and grades.

TEACHING, COACHING, WORKSHOPS: I have taught movement and voice as a visiting session leader for various drama classes in club, school and university environments and also coach 1 to 1 acting and audition-technique classes as a private tutor, having recently helped students to gain places or reach final recall/reserve lists at LAMDA, Welsh College, RADA, Mountview, ArtsEd, Central, Drama Studio, Urdang and Arts Ed.
I have designed and led my own two-week acting master-class courses for mature students and have varied experience of using theatre in outreach community and educational environments.
I have worked as a freelance tutor in London, affiliated with established and respected companies offering acting and performance classes to both corporate and leisure clients. I have experience in this context of teaching acting, voice, improvisation, public speaking, presentation and communication skills and verse. I have also programmed and led team-building or away day activities for corporate clients.
I have worked as a performance coach on a 1-1 basis - aiding individuals with presentation in personal and professional social situations and have mentored university music students who are looking to find more narrative in their live performance.
I have recently become more focused on coaching breath and voice work for confidence and centring - drawing on my experience as a student of Patsy Rodenburg.
I have also worked with practicing psychologists using acting and drama exercises to offer transferable vocabulary for use in their interaction with clients.
Companies I have worked for in these contexts include: City Academy, Balanced Minds, The British Library, The Dylan Thomas Centre, We Work, Arts Factory, Drama Queens, The Young Person’s Theatre Project, Theatre Delicatessen, WaterBear College of Music and Creation Theatre Company.

SCAFFOLD STATE: In 2013 I established 'Scaffold State' as a theatre production and a performing arts training company. The training company works for a mixed client base and also provides performance skills training for corporate clients. I currently manage all aspects of the company, including budgets of up to £15000 with occasional accompanying funding applications; marketing and social media presence, as well as acting as one of the trainers. I design all of the course content personally and direct and produce the majority of productions as well as having written original plays for performance. I source other teachers and creatives as part of a ‘hub’ mentality where necessary, drawing on an extended network of creative professionals I have worked with over the years and handle all aspects of invoicing and payment. Post-pandemic I have run the majority of these activities on a smaller scale through a personal Patreon website and increasingly run classes online. I maintain a loyal client base, some of whom have been working with me for 10 years. April 2025 marks our first theatre production post pandemic - exciting times!!
Aside from producing, directing, designing, devising and writing more than 20 ticketed productions, courses I regularly lead and staff include: Intro to Acting, Approaches to Shakespeare and Contemporary Scene Study.
